GUIDELINES & FAQS

Who can participate?

  • Any current student of a recognised educational institute in India and abroad can participate in the Competition provided the student is under 25 years on the first day of the Festival.
  • There is no entry fee for participating in the Competition.
  • There is no restriction on the number of students participating from one institute.
  • The Director, Cinematographer and Editor of a film necessarily have to be students. Non-student actors and other crew members are allowed if so desired.
  • All films made on or after 31st January 2016 shall be accepted for competition.
  • For the Animation Category, any film made on or after  31st January, 2015 (two year acceptance window) can be submitted.
  • Only one entry per person per category is allowed.
  • Films once submitted to FirstCut in the previous years are not eligible for re-submission.

Competition categories:

The Festival has four Competition Categories:

  • Short Film: Fiction (Duration: 5 to 20 minutes)
  • Short Film: Non-Fiction (Duration: 5 to 20 minutes)
  • Nano Film (Duration: 1 to 5 minutes)
  • Animation (Duration: upto 10 minutes)

Films outside the time duration range specified for each Competition Category will not be considered for Awards. The specified duration includes the film credits.

A student can send only one entry per Competition Category.

Procedure and Awards:

  • A Contestant must first register as a delegate.
  • Submission: Participants must fill out FirstCut’s Submission Form, upload their film/s on Youtube (or send a link through Google Drive or mail it in a CD/DVD) & provide the link to the same on the submission form.
  • Ten films will be shortlisted in each Category by a panel of Judges and screened during the Festival.
  • Another panel of Judges will select the 1st and 2nd Best films from the shortlisted films in each category.
  • Each Awardee will get an individual trophy, a certificate and cash awards.
  • Transaction charges will be deducted from the cash prizes awarded to International winning films.
  • All shortlisted films will be provided hospitality (food on FLAME campus and sharing rooms with students) and a travel subsidy.
  • A college scoring maximum points will be awarded a rolling trophy counting 10 points for 1st Prize, 5 points for 2nd prize and 2 points for being shortlisted without getting an award. FLAME University will not compete for this trophy.

Production Guidelines

  • FirstCut believes that the contents of a film, originality and innovativeness are important dimensions of a young person’s film.
  • Students are free to use any camera/ technology available to them. Projection-worthy picture/sound quality preferred.
  • While students have complete freedom in selecting a film’s theme, story, approach and style, all laws of the land need to be respected (incl those relating to obscenity, defamation, copyright and inciting communal disharmony). Final call regarding the content shall be taken by the jury members.
  • Films made in any language other than Hindi or English must require English subtitles.

Miscellaneous

  • All rights to the films submitted will remain with the filmmaker but FLAME will have unrestricted rights to use the submitted material in any way it deems fit including on social media for promoting its activities including FirstCut.
  • FirstCut reserves the right to change its Rules and Guidelines any time at its sole discretion.
  • The decision of the Panel of Jury will be final.

Important Dates:

Deadline for submission of films: 7th February, 2017

Final Screening of Shortlisted Films: 18th and 19th February, 2017.
