“I guess short films have a bright future… The advantage is budget” – Anurag Kashyap
Every great filmmaker in the history started off with a short film. One great advantage is that a brilliant short film can be shot on an inexpensive camera with little resources. All that is needed is a great idea and a clear sense of direction. You have complete freedom in selecting your theme, story, approach and style while making your film. You can use any camera that you can get.
‘Truth is stranger than fiction’. The world around us is full of real life stories that would make for a compelling watch. These stories are capable of evoking the entire gamut of emotions from poignancy to hilarity to ecstasy. FirstCut recognizes the impact that short documentary films can have. It invites you to make an impression on the diverse audience at the Festival and on the social media. The gauntlet has been thrown. Are you up for making something that we will never forget?
For the attention-deficit audience of the 21st century, a three-hour film is a complete no-no and a ninety-minute film a challenge. It’s a short film that’s a haven for this viewer, and “Nano” film a heaven!
For FirstCut’s exclusive NANO film category, the challenge is to keep it really short – not less than 1 minute, not more than 5 minutes. Choose a crazy subject. Get Experimental. And Make something – an ad, a spoof, a reverse motion film, just about anything that’ll blow our minds! Try not to keep it too serious here. Just keep it short, or rather, “Nano”.
“Animation is a great way to work. No early morning call times, no make-up chair. In live action, you're always fighting the clock; the sun is always going down too soon.” John C. Reilly
